                                                                              St. Patrick's Day
  1. Saint Patrick was a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the primary patron saint of Ireland, along with saints Brigit of Kildare and Columba.
  1. The Origins of StPatrick's DayStPatrick's Day celebrates the Roman Catholic feast day of the patron saint of Ireland. StPatrick died on March 17, 461. But did you know that he wasn't even Irish.
  1. The first documented StPatrick's Day Celebration in Philadelphia was held in 1771. Philadelphia's Friendly Sons of StPatrick was found to honor StPatrick and to provide relief to Irish immigrants in the city. Irish Americans have celebrated St.Patrick's Day in Philadelphia since their arrival in America.
  1. Therefore, on StPatrick's Day, Protestants protest by wearing orange instead of green. Ironically, no one wears white; the placement of the white stripe between the green and orange stripes on the Irish flag is supposed to symbolize the peace between the Roman Catholic majority and the Protestant minority.
  1. Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador (for provincial government employees), and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.
